Ontem de manhã, recebi uma notícia terrível: Outro jovem monge tibetano suicidou-se, imolando-se pelo fogo em protesto contra a repressão religiosa da China.

Tsewang Norbu do Mosteiro Nyitso era provavelmente tão despretensioso e humilde como qualquer um de seus irmãos monges tibetanos. Quando ele se sentou numa ponte perto de um escritório do governo local em Kham a espalhar folhetos pró-Tibete e começou a clamar pelo regresso de Sua Santidade o Dalai Lama ao Tibete, deveria ter havido motivo para alarme.

Pegou uma lata de gasolina, encharcou-se com ela, e pegou fogo a si mesmo.

É claro que Tsewang acreditou que essa era a maneira com que ele poderia chamar a atenção do mundo para as insuportáveis acções repressivas que o governo chinês está a perpetrar no Tibete.

É nosso dever – seu e meu – garantir que sua trágica morte não foi em vão.

Por favor assine nossa petição para Gary Locke – novo embaixador dos EUA para a China -, instando-o a usar todo o poder da diplomacia dos EUA para pôr termo às violações direitos humanos na China e a repressão cultural e religiosa que está na base de tragédias como a morte de Tsewang e Phuntsok .

Yesterday morning, I received some terrible news: Another young Tibetan monk has taken his own life, by setting himself on fire in protest of China’s religious repressions.

Tsewang Norbu of Nyitso Monastery was more than likely as unassuming and humble as any of his Tibetan monk brothers. So when he sat down on a bridge outside a local government office in Kham, spread out pro-Tibet leaflets, and began calling for the return of His Holiness the Dalai Lama to Tibet, there should have been cause for alarm.

Then he took a canister of gasoline, doused himself with it, and lit himself on fire.

It’s clear that Tsewang believed this was the way he could call the attention of the world to the unbearable, repressive actions the Chinese government is perpetrating in Tibet.

It’s our duty – yours and mine – to ensure that his tragic death was not in vain.

Please sign our petition to Gary Locke – new U.S. Ambassador to China – today, urging him to use all the power of U.S. diplomacy to stop China’s human rights violations and the cultural and religious repressions at the heart of tragedies like the deaths of Tsewang and Phuntsok.
